Curators Group: Alexandr Roitburd and Alisa Lozhkina
Don't ask us about golden loaf. We don't know where it is. But its spirit continues to disturb our society - as well as the spirit of its owner, in whose house it was founded.
But besides ghostly golden loaf many other things were found in Mezhyhiria that are interesting from the artistic point of view. Old valuable books, sculptures, icons, paintings, utensils, furnishings, collectible weapons and souvenirs. Among them there were some really unique pieces as well as examples of outright tastelessness and fakes. Museum experts and members of the Blue Shield organization made a decision to transfer so called "Treasures of Mezhyhiria" for temporary storage to the National Art Museum of Ukraine. Later some items from the house of Viktor Pshonka were included.
At first presentation of these objects for the public in the museum was not planned. But when the halls of the 1st floor of the exhibition were filled with various goods, often provocative and with specific "aura", it was decided that the public needs to see it and make its own conclusions. Visiting curator and artist Alexandr Roitburd proposed to build the exposition in a form of an inventory book in order to avoid professional evaluation and just to let these objects speak and testify for themselves.
Young artists Oleksandr Burlaka and Ivan Melnychuk worked on the public presentation and embodiment of this idea. In their artistic practice they critically reassess space with its components and semantic load.
As it was noted by Alexandr Roitburd: "This outrageous tastelessness in many ways can be didactic. If the fourth president of our poor country had at least a little less "zhlobskyi" redneck taste and maybe slightly more modest house and cabinet, then the gang that surrounded him (or so-called "elite") would probably start to fight for the first place in modesty and democracy, but not in Gypsy Baron style luxury. And then the level of corruption would go down and kleptocracy would fade. We should not neglect the importance of style on the ethic climate."
Educational program of the exhibition includes meetings with artists, art-critics, politicians, members of governmental institutions along with open discussions and other public events.
Pre-registration is requested for the press conference.
