Return to the homeland
Curator: Oksana Kozynkevych
Project of Lviv Art Gallery presented works of world-wide famous “Ukrainian Parisians” Mykola VAKER (1897, Kyiv — 1987, Paris), Oleksa HRYSHCHENKO (1883, Krolevets in Sumy Region — 1977, Vence, nearby Nice), Borys PASTUKHOV (1894, Kyiv — 1974, London) and Vasyl KHMELIUK (1903, Berezivka in Vinnitsa Region — 1986, Paris) from the the Tsvenhrish family collection.
The exhibition was shown last autumn in Lviv Art Gallery. And it became a real sensation! By virtue of our compatriots works of the great artists returned from Europe to their homeland!
Collectors Oksana and Yuriy Tsvenhrish introduced the works of internationally renowned masters of the Ukrainian Parisian School from their art collection. These artists achieved a world-wide fame supported by collectors, gallery owners, people, who cared about collecting.
First of all it refers to Oleksa Hryshchenko and Vasyl Khmeliuk. Learner of Oleksandr Murashko, Borys Pastukhov, and Mykola Vaker are also presented from collection of the Tsvenhrish family. The exhibition, to our opinion, is not usual considering the significant contribution of Ukrainian Parisian School representatives to the promotion of Ukrainian art all over the world. They cared for its prestige and added many positive things to the all-European art movement: first of all they struggled jointly for the high ideals of the school of painting.
This exhibition united us with Paris, with those, who'd united Ukrainian traditions with Westernism (oktsydentalism according to V.Yaniv). We feel a deep respect to people like Oksana and Yuriy Tsvenhrish: assisting classic national heritage with their collecting activities, they are full with the thoughts about support for the present Hryshchenkos and Khmeliuls. Modern shoots of Ukraine finds its patrons, but not in the name of a state — sometimes it comes from the West, but mainly among our art collectors, its true admirers”…
