The Artists of the Southern Palmyra. Late XIXth – early XXth century
Curator: Olga Zhbankova
“From the collection of The National Art Museum of Ukraine” is a series of exhibits to show works from its collection since only a little part of it is exhibited in the galleries. The first exhibit in this series represents Odessa’s artists, who worked in the late 19th – on the beginning of 20th century. At this time Odessa with its art school (opened in 1865) was important art center, which had an influence on the art development not only of southern region, but all Ukraine. In works of Odessa’s artists reflected the most significant features of the national paintings of those time: natural combination of realistic traditions and pictorial innovations. In 1890 Odessa artists founded a Society of South-Russian Artists that became the herald of the ideas of Itinerants in Ukraine. At the same time Odessa artists were the first ones in Ukraine, who started to master issues of light and color in the context of European art processes, creatively reinterpreting artistic acquisitions of French impressionists. Odessa artists always were notable among Itinerants for their synthesis of psychological aspects with decorative forms and colors. Not accidentally I.Repin called them “colorists with delicate sense of form”.
