Serhiy Shyshko: to the 100th anniversary

The project demonstrates about 100 works from NAMU collection (the most representative one among the monographic collections of the artist), supplemented with works from other Kyiv museums.
The exhibition shows to the public mature and well known Shyshko’s works (such as “Winter”, “Peaceful fields”, “Sunflowers”, “Kyiv Suite” series) together with his unique early compositions from the late 1930’s – early 1940’s (“Wide Field”, “Country Yard”, “In Devastated Chernihiv” etc).
Serhiy Fedorovych Shyshko was born at 12th of June, 1911 in the village Nosivka in Chernihiv region. Studying in Kyiv Art Institute (in the workshop of Oleksandr Bohomazov and Fedir Krychevskyi) and All-Russian Academy of Art in Leningrad (under the lead of Borys Joganson and O. Zaitsev), Shyshko received art education of European level. His paintings give us an example of impressionistic approach to the nature, very rare in 1950-1970’s, considering the dominant social realistic trend of the time.
The artist participated in the World War II, and made many front sketches (“Ruins of Kyiv”, “Ruins of Khreshchatyk”, etc).
The most fully the artist expressed himself in the landscape genre, which attracted Shyshko all his life. The geographical scope of master’s works was rather wide, including Petersburg, Central Asia, the Baltic States, Czechoslovakia. However, he always remained faithful to his love to Ukraine.
Almost fifty years Shyshko dedicated to the landscapes of Kyiv, where he lived since 1944 (“Kyiv. Mariinskyi Palace”, “Holosiivskyi Forest”, “Old Podil). In 1982 the big cycle of works, united under the title “Kyiv is a beloved city”, was honoured with the Shevchenko State Premium of USSR.
The exhibition gives a unique opportunity to see the retrospective of the best works of Serhiy Shyshko.
