present the exhibition Jacques Chapiro. Kyiv - Paris (11.04-04.05.2013)
The jubilee "French Spring" invites visitors to feel the air of Paris of the last century.
In the beginning of the 20th century Paris was burning with new ideas. Artists from around the world came there, and the art of the new age was born in coffee houses, workshops and uncomely apartments of Montmartre and Montparnasse.
La Ruche, or Hive, had the special significance among art communities. In its walls, under its conical-shaped roof the art of Modigliani, Chagall, Soutine, Leger, and Archipenko was being formed. "One either dies in La Ruche, or becomes a celebrity", the people were saying in Paris. Jacques Chapiro was one of those who survived and became a celebrity.
He became Jacques in 1925 after moving to Paris. In his homeland he was known as Jacob. Chapiro was born in 1897 in Daugavpils in a Jewish family. He got the traditional Jewish education and started to learn art. In 1915-1920 he studied in Kharkiv and Kyiv, run the Art school in Katerynoslav (Dnipropetrovsk nowadays), and participated in art sections of Kultur Lige in Kyiv. In 1920 Chapiro continued his studying in Petrograd and worked simultaneously as a decorator in Meyergold's theatre. Then he moved to Moscow, worked with Vakhtangov's studio-theatre and started exhibiting his works. Jacques Chapiro has already been famous as a theathre decorator in Moscow when he moved to France. In Paris he exhibited in such salons as Tuileries, Society of Independent Artists, Autumn Salon, had solo exhibitions in Paris and abroad. In 1960 Chapiro published his memoirs of La Ruche.
The symbolic rendez-vous with the artist will be held in the National Art Museum of Ukraine. À bientôt!
