PLACES. Kazimir Malevich Artistic Award Laureates
Curator: Monika Szewczyk
Presentation of the project Places in the National Art Museum was planned in 2013 on the 21st of February, 2014. This was planned to be the Ukrainian part of a major initiative to support and promote Ukrainian visual arts. The museum was preparing to present to the public the results of work of the artists Alevtina Kakhidze, Stas Voliazlovskyi, and Zhanna Kadyrova, the laureates of Kazimir Malevich Artistic Award. But from January 19 the museum was closed because of the siege by military forces and the battle on Hrushevskogo street. The project was delayed. The situation in the country has changed not only the date of the exhibition, but also the context. Society, the museum, and the artists themselves have changed. Place continues to remain the main motive of the three stories, but takes on new meanings. Kazimir Malevich Artistic Award winners investigate the relationship between the area of public and private, talk about the relationships between individual and society, and invite the viewer to reflection. First Places exhibition of the three Award winners was shown in the Arsenal Gallery (Bialystok, Poland). Alevtina Kakhidze - First Prize laureate in 2008 - not only participated in the Ukrainian-Polish project, but also initiated the visit of Polish artists to Ukraine. Stas Volyazovskyy - winner of the 2010 - made ??a movie of his Polish roots, participated in exhibitions of Ukrainian art in Poland and of Polish art in Ukraine. Zhanna Kadyrova - awarded as the original sculptor in 2012 and the member of the group Revolutionary Experimental Space (R.E.P.) - also implemented a project during their stay at the residence. Kazimir Malevich Artistic Award was founded in 2008 by the Polish Institute in Kyiv and Ukrainian Foundation Centre for Contemporary Art. One of its purposes is to draw attention to artists who use the original language in their works and provide them with the opportunity to create and stay in Poland. The first formal incentive is the residence in the Center for Contemporary Art Zamek Ujazdowski in Warsaw. Thanks to the artists make new friends and professional contacts. Important task is to create the new points of dialogue between artistic mediums in Poland and Ukraine. Kazimir Malevich Artistic Award is given every two years to an artist under 40 who was born in Ukraine, regardless of the current location, for his contribution to modern art, especially for the quality, skills, achievements, and significance of created works. The next competition will be announced in autumn 2014. Read more on www.polinst.kiev.ua.
